Declared a modern architectural wonder by the American Society of Civil Engineers, at its opening in 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge held the title of the longest and tallest suspension bridge on Earth. Measuring a a cumulative length of 1.7 miles (2737 meters), the bridge spans the "Golden Gate" straights where the Pacific Ocean flows into San Fransisco Bay, connecting the city with Marin County to the North.

Originally built in 1727 to honor King Louis IX of France, New Orleans’ houses the oldest established Catholic church in the United States. Rebuilt in 1794 after the original structure was destroyed by fire, the cathedral still holds services daily.
